Vischniac, Roman

(1897-1990)

   Russian photographer. Born in St Petersburg, he studied zoology at Moscow University. After the Russian Revolution he settled in Latvia and then Berlin. He later embarked on a sustained journey through the Jewish communities of Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Hungary, Czechoslovakia and Germany recording the lives of Eastern European Jewry. Later he went to France and then to the US where he was a portrait photographer. His works include A Vanished World.
